The town of Tanvald is located in the district of Jablonec nad Nisou in the Liberec Region and it also includes two local parts Šumburk nad Desnou and Žďár.
The first mention of the timber settlement on the left bank of Kamenice dates from the second half of the 16th century, when it was probably part of Smržovka; it became an independent village at the beginning of the 17th century. The first written mention of the village dates from 1611.
Currently, the city of Tanvald has 6146 permanent residents.
Tanvald is the natural center of life in the area bordering the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. It is also the tourist center of the eastern tip of the Jizera Mountains, where hundreds of domestic and foreign visitors come throughout the year.
