The name of the city, known worldwide thanks to its stellar achievements in the field of solar activity research, is derived from the "little river Úpa".
The city stretches along both banks of the Úpa River in a gorge valley bordered by the "U lipek" hill and the forests of Svobodny, Milešovka, Velbaba, Skalka, Dlouhý Záhony and Rtyňka. The area of the cadastre is 1530 ha. The Úpa River flows through the city from the west in a tight arc to the south. The Radečka stream flows into the Úpa on the right bank, and the Rtyňka stream on the left. Elevation at the bridge Sv. Bohemia (by the Savings Bank) is 337 m above sea level, the threshold of the church of St. Jakub on the square 359 m above sea level, the height of "U lipek" is 416 m above sea level and the highest point on the Úpice cadastre is 464, 20 m above sea level. The highest point on the cadastre of the integrated municipality of Radeč is the hill on Červená hlína 501 m.a.s.l.
