The Statutory City of Zlín is a natural center of the Zlín Region and is situated in the Dřevnice valley on the border of the Hostýn and Vizovice Hills. Zlín has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, and the city developed greatly during the era of the Baťa shoe family, who built a modern agglomeration with a number of unique functionalist buildings. In 1949 the city was renamed Gottwaldov and in 1990 back to Zlín. At present it is the commercial, industrial and cultural center of East Moravia.
