Petrovice lies at the state border with the Republic of Poland. The total area of Petrovice is 2047 ha and is located at an average altitude of 225 m.
The village currently has 4545 inhabitants.

The village of Petrovice u Karviné consists of four parts: Petrovice, Dolní Marklovice, Závada and Prstná. During development, these parts were merged several times and became independent again. The current form of the village was issued by the Decree of the Ministry of the Interior of 16 February 1952.

It borders the commune of Godów in the north, the commune of Zebrzydowice in the east, both in the Republic of Poland, the south of Karviná and
in the west with the village Dětmarovice.
Three rivers flow through Petrovice - Šotkůvka in Prstná, Petrůvka, which flows through all parts of the village except Prstná and Olše, into which Petrůvka flows into the Závada section.

The most important cultural monument of the village is a wooden church in Dolní Marklovice. It is one of the most beautiful and best preserved churches in the whole of Upper Silesia. It was built in 1739 on the site of the original wooden church dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord. The first mention of this church comes from 1360.

Typical for Petrovice u Karviné are ponds, the most famous of which are Urbanczyk's ponds in Petrovice, Radecký's pond or Adamecký's pond in Dolní Marklovice.

The village is known as a railway junction of European importance. In addition to the railway border crossing, there are two other road crossings to the Republic of Poland, in Dolní Marklovice and in Závada.
