Zbýšov is a former mining town with almost 4000 inhabitants, which lies in the district Brno-venkov about 30 km from Brno. It is situated at an altitude of 348 m above sea level and its area is 601 hectares. The first written record comes from 1280, when the then owner, the land marshal Bohuš of Drahotuš, donated the village of Zbýšov to his daughter and the monastery in Oslavany. In 1965 Zbýšov was granted city status. In 1969 the modern mine Henry II was opened, which became the deepest (1550 m) hard coal mine in Central Europe. Other important mines in the town and its surroundings included Simson, Antonín and Anna, one of the oldest shafts of the early 19th century. Coal mining came to an end in the early 1990s.
