It has been called Sandy since 1948, before it was referred to as Sandhýbl, which was similar to the German Sandhübel, ie a sand hill, a hill.
In 1924, the settlements Studený Zejf (German Kaltenseifen - in the sense of a cold creek and gold placer) and Chebzí (Hollunder - to mark the elderberry) were attached to Sandhýblu.
Písečná lies in the valley of the Bělá River 7 km northeast of Jeseník (mean altitude 405 m above sea level), about half way from this town to the border crossing with Poland Mikulovice-Głuchołazy. The former settlements are located from Písečná to the south, in the valley of the Bělá River, Studený Zejf (484 m above sea level) and then in the valley of the homonymous brook Chebzí (520 m above sea level).
During the last census in 1991, 1073 people lived in 226 houses in Písečná, of which 158 people in 39 houses in the Studený Zejf district and only 15 people in 5 houses in the Cheb district.
Today Písečná lies approximately in the middle of the original large village in the valley of Bělá, called Waltersdorf (Waltherovice), which is already mentioned in 1284 and which probably disappeared before 1420.
